STATEMENT
I think of art as a form of communication that informs the audience with ideas and motivates them to act in their own environment. With this in mind, I currently focus on consumer life in the cities, intending to suggest moments of reflection, respect, and generosity in one’s relationship with the surrounding environment (including but not limited to things, events, people and other lives) through my works.
Behind this lie the ideas of Social Sculpture by Joseph Beuys; of Japanese animism, a belief that everything has a spirit or a soul; and of altruism and peaceful coexistence found in Zen or Mahayana Buddhism.
My works take multiple forms, drawing inspirations from my personal encounter with things or people in everyday life. It is sometimes a performance that makes a mundane object or scenery slightly unusual, and at other times, a piece or an installation made of repetitive elements or an instruction for anyone to perform. Overall, it is an embodiment of my act to look and listen in order to learn about the subject, to respect, or to stop and think.
I aim to make each of my work and myself as an artist an attitude model that speaks to the audience intimately rather than didactic, asking them to reflect on themselves or take action. To that end, I use materials and forms found in everyday life in the cities, such as food, clothes, advertisements, and even words/language for my work.

Shoko Yamamura
BIOGRAPHY
Shoko Yamamura is a Japanese artist born in 1984, currently lives in Hyogo, Japan. She has received BFA from Cleveland Institute of Art in 2008, and MFA from California College of the Arts in 2010. She has participated in the Artist in Residence program at Cité internationale des arts, Paris (by Chishima Foundation for Creative Osaka and Villa Kujoyama) in 2020 right after the COVID outbreak. She has been a C.A.P. member since 2022. Her recent exhibition includes "Earth Friendly Art Festival Nara Machiya Art Festival Hanarart 2021",Tenri, Nara, which was postponed to 2022 due to COVID.
Her works mainly take the form of performances (showing of acts) and installations. Focusing on everyday affairs and materials, she intends to generate a moment for reflection, respect, and generosity in terms of one’s relationship with one's surroundings through her work.
STATEMENT
私は、アートとはコミュニケーションの一つの形であり、鑑賞者に情報を伝達し、各々の環境で行動を起こすためのヒントとなるものと考えています。その上で現在は主に都市の消費者生活に焦点を当て、作品を通して周囲の環境(もの・こと・ひとやいきものなど)に関して立ち止まり内省する、敬意や優しさを表すといった、自他のコミュニケーションの在り方や他に向かう態度を問いかけ、提案することを大きなテーマとして制作しています。
背景にはヨーゼフ・ボイスの社会彫刻や、日本のアニミズムに見られる万物に命が宿るという考え、また、禅そして大乗仏教の精神に見られる利他や(平和的な)共生といった考えの影響があります。
作品は多様な形をとり、日常生活に見られるものや人々との個人的な出会いを起点に制作しています。日常の風景に少し違和感を与えるようなパフォーマンスや単純な要素を繰り返して構成されるインスタレーション、または誰でも実践できるできそうなインストラクションなど様々なものがありますが、全て私の対象を見て聴いて知ろうとする行為、敬意を表す行為、または立ち止まって考える行為が形を成したものであり、行為の記録やその伝達とも言えます。
作品が何かを教えるのではなく、作品や作家の立ち位置が鑑賞者にとって比較的身近なモデルケースとなり、鑑賞者が自身を振り返り問いかけること、さらに実際の行動につながることを目標に構成しています。このため、食べ物、衣服や広告、そして言葉などといった、都市に生きる人々に身近な、日常に見られるものを素材に用いています。

BIOGRAPHY
1984年生まれ、兵庫県在住。クリーブランド、及びベイエリアで美術を学ぶ。帰国後企業やギャラリー勤務を経て活動開始。2022年4月からKOBE STUDIO Y3にスタジオアーティストとして参加。2010年カリフォルニア美術大学院 ファインアート学科 テキスタイル専攻 修士課程 修了
2020年 コロナ禍でおおさか創造千島財団×ヴィラ九条山Artist in Residence program in Paris 2019/2020参加、2022年「奈良・町屋の芸術祭 はならぁと2021」 天理, 奈良、
主に日常の行為や衣食住に焦点を当て、パフォーマンス（行為の展示）や制作を行う。
周囲の環境（もの・こと・ひと）に関して立ち止まり内省する、敬意や優しさを表すといった、自と他のコミュニケーションの在り方や他に向かう態度を作家自身そして作品がモデルとなり、問いかけ、提案することを大きなテーマとしている。
